Background of the Study
Collaborative learning has become an increasingly important pedagogical strategy in nursing education, promoting teamwork, critical thinking, and peer support among students. Online discussion forums have emerged as an effective tool for facilitating collaborative learning, particularly in contexts where students may not have frequent in-person interactions (Barnett et al., 2024). These forums allow students to engage in discussions, share ideas, and solve problems together in a virtual environment. This is particularly valuable in nursing education, where collaboration and communication are essential for providing high-quality patient care (Lai et al., 2023).
The University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) offers nursing programs where students participate in online discussion forums as part of their coursework. These platforms provide students with opportunities to interact with their peers, exchange knowledge, and clarify complex concepts related to nursing practice. However, while the benefits of collaborative learning through online discussion forums are well established, there is limited research on how this strategy specifically impacts nursing students' learning outcomes in Nigeria. Given the increasing reliance on digital tools in education, understanding the effects of online discussion forums on collaborative learning in nursing education at UCTH is crucial for improving teaching practices and student engagement.
This study aims to explore the impact of online discussion forums on collaborative learning and academic success among nursing students at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital. By assessing students’ participation, engagement, and learning outcomes, this research will contribute to enhancing the effectiveness of online learning tools in nursing education.
Statement of the Problem
The shift towards digital learning tools, including online discussion forums, has become a key component of nursing education at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital. However, the impact of these platforms on students’ collaborative learning and academic performance remains under-explored. Nursing students often struggle to engage effectively in online discussions, which could result in missed opportunities for collaborative learning and reduced academic success (Ralph et al., 2024). The lack of research in this area makes it difficult to assess whether online discussion forums effectively support collaborative learning in nursing programs. Understanding the impact of these forums on students’ collaborative learning will provide insights into their role in enhancing academic success and improving nursing education.

Research Hypotheses
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nursing students at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital who participate in online discussion forums as part of their coursework. The research will evaluate the impact of these forums on collaborative learning and academic performance. Limitations may include the challenge of measuring engagement levels accurately and potential biases in self-reported data from students.
